Is Sri Lanka still Lonely Planets no.1 Holiday Destination for 2019

Is Sri Lanka still Lonely Planet’s no.1 Travel Destination for 2019? Yes!

Is Sri Lanka still Lonely Planets no.1 travel destination for 2019? The Answer is 100%, yes and there’s a good reason. Although the country was hit by cowardly attacks that killed hundreds of people and threated the tourism industry and locals alike, the country has pulled through and reports state that tourism bookings in June were up 66% on May 2019.
“While we don’t discount the fear many travelers feel, we should not allow events like this to deter us from continuing to explore, learn and break down stereotypes. In recent weeks, countries have softened their travel warnings to Sri Lanka, including the UK,”  Lonely Planet writer Caterina Hrysomallis
Eden Villas in Sri Lanka guests second that and we felt that it would help many of you out there make personal decisions on whether or not you should still be visiting Sri Lanka in the near future. Below we have gathered a few of our recent guest’s reviews that have been posted on various platforms around the web between January 2019 and June 2019.

BEACH VILLAS

Suriyawatta

WOW. What a place. Great for everyone. Fabulous service.

Left on Jun 10, 2019, for a stay in Jun 2019

Suriyawatta is a beautiful, picturesque villa overlooking the beach in Weligama. We booked the villa with our friends, our group consisted of 3 families young families and a single friend. Children ranging from 0-4. The aim of the holiday was to have a relaxing couple of days where we didn’t have to worry about safety or entertaining the children, while still having a fun holiday with friends. We hit the jackpot! The villa is perfect for groups and families, there is enough space for 14 people sleeping, and the space around the villa compliments this and allows everyone to find their own space for some quiet time. We found ourselves moving from area to area throughout the day. We didn’t once need to leave the villa. There are a few things to do around the area, however, I have to say, you will probably be more than happy staying put. 😉 Our little one spent the whole day splashing around in the infinity pool, while we enjoyed the views from it, the pool has both sun and shade so we could send the whole day there without worry. There is a seasonally safe swimming beach two houses down. The staff were really fantastic, they were there when we needed but never made us feel uncomfortable. There is a chef, whose food was fabulous, the menu catered for all, and enough options for the whole stay, although they may now have run out of chocolate fudge cake 😉 This was a great trip and it was all done to the villa and the staff. Thank you 🙂

Ranawara

Sublime villa with unparalleled service

Left on Jul 24, 2019 for a stay in Jul 2019

We stayed 7 nights at Ranawara with 2 other families and it was the perfect place for our group of 6 adults and 6 teens. The villa is absolutely stunning – the photos cannot do it justice. Every detail, big and small, has been carefully considered. As beautiful as the villa is, what really lifted our experience to the next level was the unparalleled service from Senaka and all the Ranawara team. The welcome was warm and genuine, the mix of local and western food prepared by the chefs was restaurant quality, varied, plentiful and always delicious, and our every need was anticipated – cold towels, drinks and chocolates in an esky ready for early morning tennis, afternoon tea by the pool, evening drinks in the upstairs bar area, a cooking demonstration by the chef, massages in the spa cabana, a friendly game of cricket with the staff, transfers to Galle with sandwiches packed for the trip … the list goes on. Tourism in Sri Lanka has been decimated by the Easter bombings, but we felt safe at all times (there is a guard patrolling the property around the clock) and are so glad we went. Book now – you won’t regret it.

The holiday of a lifetime!

Left on Apr 15, 2019, for a stay in Apr 2019

I may not have stayed in all the worlds best hotels or villas but would be very surprised if this is not in the top 10. The venue is unsurpassed in its beauty and the pool is enormous. But what really makes Ranawara amazing is the on-site staff who are exceptional! The food served to us was consistently excellent, and going the extra yard is what this team is all about e.g. we never asked for cool boxes full of children’s snacks but they did it anyway. I would love to come back but I fear I may never and worse still, this benchmark will never be surpassed.

Walatta House

The most amazing place I’ve ever stayed at!

Left on Mar 20, 2019, for a stay in Mar 2019

Walatta House is an incredible place, absolutely perfect getaway house for a couple in love. Once we arrived and saw the place, we decided to not leave the house and just indulge in everything it has to offer. And that’s a lot: a beautiful private room with a huge window looking at the pool (+ two more rooms that we didn’t use), garden and the ocean below, lush garden with a hammock, super comfortable chill area in the shade, amazing pool, private way to the beach, tasty food served the way you want it, and great staff that provided us with anything we could think of. Couldn’t wish for more, really! All we can think about since we left is how to come back once again 😀 Simply a paradise! 10/10

LAKE VILLAS

Villa Serendipity

Super stylish villa with excellent service and brilliant value

Left on Jun 10, 2019, for a stay in Jun 2019

Our time at Villa Serendipity was outstanding. Not only is the villa beautifully designed, with stunning views over Lake Koggala, the staff and food are also excellent. Everything had been thought of to make our stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. Chef Asanka’s food was delicious, and the villa staff kept the place spotless and made us cocktails throughout the day. Absolute bliss. We also used the Villa Concierge service a lot, with Udeshika booking us various activities and in-villa wellness (yoga, bootcamp and massages) and making some great restaurant recommendations when we decided to go out for lunch. We’ll definitely be returning and will be recommending the villa to our friends and family!

Mandalay Lake Villa

Amazing stay in Mandalay

Left on Apr 17, 2019, for a stay in Mar 2019

This villa is absolutely amazing. Set in a beautiful part of Sri Lanka, just 20 minutes from Galle, it’s stunning. The photographs do not do it justice. Chintaka and the team at the villa are some of the most caring people you will meet. They looked after us and children impeccably. Chintaka is a great chef too. Get him to cook as much Sri Lankan food as possible. Thank you to everyone associated with the villa. Amazing care and service.

FAMILY VILLAS

Wijaya Giri

Superb Villa

Left on May 21, 2019,  for a stay in Apr 2019

A tremendous villa for a family holiday, we had an amazing time thanks to the team of 4 staff and the facilities of the property. The villa was very clean, wonderful interiors and a superb outside space for the kids to play. However, the main attraction of the villa is the warmth of the team, the food was exceptional (especially the pineapple, potato and prawn curries) and they couldn.t do enough to support us with the kids and ideas of where to go around the area. We will be back.

Talalla House

An Amazing Retreat on a secluded beach

Left on Apr 1, 2019, for a stay in Dec 2017

We rented the house with family and friends from 5y/o to 15 y/o kids and plenty of surf and booze. We had a blast and a really hood time there. From the housekeeper to the manager and cooker everything ran perfectly and they provided all we wanted and needed, from medical assistance to special night with local dancers. A must go!

Meda Gedara

Beautiful villa

Left on Mar 5, 2019, for a stay in Feb 2019

We had a great stay at the beautiful Meda Gedara. Three generations had a great time. The beach at the end of the villa was beautiful. Pool and slide were well used. Children loved the tuk-tuk rides and the daily visit of different wildlife, monkeys, peacocks, lizards. Staff were all excellent and the food was delicious. I hope we can visit again.

Ranawara

Awesome experience

Left on Mar 2, 2019,  for a stay in Feb 2019

This is an incredible villa. Beyond the luxuriousness of the whole place, and all the details, the very careful maintenance, the location is beyond awesome, with an absolutely stunning beach in front of the property. The team in the villa, headed by Senaka, was fantastic and we had phenomenal food every day, nothing frozen, everything fresh. The team also organized all our day trips with great drivers and very interesting experiences of Sri Lanka. Our whole family had a great time and the kids enjoyed themselves tremendously. We´ll be back!

RURAL VILLA

Ivory House

Best villa stay ever!

Left on Apr 25, 2019,  for a stay in Apr 2019

We had the privilege to stay at Ivory House on April 2019 for 1 week. From the moment we arrived a sense of calm and tranquility passed over us all. We were welcomed with warmth and love by Sunil and Pradeep who catered to our every need. The house itself it stunning; immaculate with effortless style. The grounds are teeming with animal life that is a joy to watch from the big wide verandas, and the pool is one of the nicest I’ve had in a private villa. It is deep enough for a dive, and long enough for morning laps with the birds. I recommend staying here, and if you do, give our warmest regards to Sunil and Pradeep who felt like family by the end.

Mandalay

Heavenly stay in this beautiful house

Left on Mar 11, 2019,   for a stay in Dec 2018

Mandalay is that rare mix of wow factor and yet homely and comfortable. The location on the edge of the lake is so serene and beautiful (FYI we had worried there would be lots of mosquitoes, who tend to really like me, but our fears were unfounded). The real beauty of this place though is the staff. Chintaka prepares the most amazing food – we ate out hardly ever once we realised the yummiest food was to be had at Mandalay. The housekeeping staff is also 5 star. In fact, all members of the house crew – gardeners and security guys included were just great. It was my 50th birthday while we were there and the staff decorated the dining area for us and laid on the most lavish banquet – brings tears to my eyes remembering it. We all long to go back to Mandalay and one day I really hope we will

Boundary House

Superb property in an enchanting, peaceful location.

Left on Jan 25, 2019,  for a stay in Jan 2019

This spacious property has been built recently with a great deal of care and style to a very high standard. It is set in a lovely, serene location but within easy reach of Unawatuna and Galle. The pool is particularly enticing; lying on a sunbed watching kingfishers and other birdlife darting through the nearby trees was a very special and memorable experience. We were very well looked after throughout our stay by the friendly and quietly attentive staff.

Ivory House

The most beautiful house I have stayed in, an absolute winner!

Left on Feb 12, 2019,  for a stay in Jan 2019

Ivory House is hidden among the paddy fields, in a beautiful, tranquil and private location. Galle is easily accessible with a short and picturesque tuk-tuk ride. Built-in true tropical style, the house is of stunning design and beautifully laid-out with an enormous patio wrapped around the front where one can relax and enjoy surrounding nature from early in the morning until late at night. Each bedroom is beautiful and quiet, with its own en-suite bathroom and high-quality beds/mattresses. The living room and open kitchen are equally beautiful, carefully decorated by the owners who clearly love this house and maintain it with the greatest care. There is a stunning pool, with lovely freshwater, expertly cleaned every day. The property does not look or feel like a rental, one could imagine living there permanently, in great luxury. The house comes with permanent staff who clearly love the house and will look after you as if you are the owner. This is the first time I have stayed at a property where I could not find a single item I would change. Bravo!
