How to Get There

The cheapest yet a scenic way to get to Galle from Colombo or even Kandy is to take the train. You could book an early train to get there before lunch. A train ride from Colombo will cost you about 1 to 2 USD. You could take the expressway bus to make it a quick journey but you will miss out on the view. An expressway bus ticket is likely to cost around 2 to 3 USD. If you have time to spare, hire a car with a driver and take the old Galle road. It will take you longer to get there but the view will make your ride worthwhile. But before you get there, just make sure you book what would be one of the most beautiful villas in Sri Lanka to spend a few days or weeks exploring the city and beyond.

What to Pack For A Holiday To Sri Lanka

Galle enjoys sunny and warm weather all year round. You should pack light clothing and as for shoes, take open-toed sandals or rubber flip flops (known as thongs for you Aussies). Take a large sun hat along with you and sunglasses to protect yourself from the harsh rays. There are plenty of supermarkets in Galle that sell sun lotion but they may not have your favourite brand and Sri Lankan locals brands aren’t great and you can’t always trust the UV protection will be sufficient. It’s also advisable to bring toiletries with you as local brands are available but often expensive and low quality unless you’re shopping in one of the many beautiful Galle Fort boutiques such as Spa Ceylon. Depending on the time of year you’re visiting a raincoat might be a good idea. If you’re planning on sitting outside at night it’s a good idea to bring light long sleeve tops/shirts and trousers. Or you can do the tourist thing and buy some elephant patterned pants when you’re here.
